The Tranquility of Weeding
Dear Farm Community -
While winter does slow down the pace of farm life, we are still hard at work every day making it all happen. This past week held lots of two things: transplanting flower seedlings & weeding. Our fingers may put up a fight in the early mornings when it’s still under 40F, but the truth is many of us on the farm love weeding - a soothing way to directly tend to our young crops before they’re large enough to outcompete the weeds. On rainy days, weeding in our greenhouses and high tunnels with the sounds of raindrops is a welcome way to stay dry(ish). A day of weeding in the fields can pass by in the blink of an eye when the weather is right and the tunes are good. It’s a way to keep careful eyes on plant health, a learning experience for many, an opportunity to say hello to all the critters hiding on the undersides of leaves and hopping through the beds, and a great way for the veggie team and the flower team to help each other out when we have extra time on our hands. So, this past week we worked hard to give our plants all the real estate they need to grow this winter, free of unwanted roommates.
We even had time to get some flowers transplanted, with all of our Ranunculus, Poppies, and Anemones now comfortably in the ground where they’ll bloom for us in the Spring. I don’t know about y’all, but we’re dreaming of the big bouquets of fresh flowers in the not-so-far-off future!
Fun announcement - all of our newsletters are now up on our website in blog form! Head to the shiny new blog section of our website to revisit all the cute photos from the year (peek at January and February’s posts for a reminder of what’s to come shortly….) and dig up that killer recipe we linked on your favorite week of CSA! We hope you enjoy this log of all things Diamond Hill :)
Saturday marked our last Athens market of the year and CSA is on break, but during this downtime and especially during the holiday season, we encourage you to read about our Share the Harvest Fund. Every season we fundraise in order to remove financial barriers that prevent some families from accessing nutritious, wholesome produce. This fund helps remove those barriers by allowing us to offer pay-what-you-can CSA shares to those community members. We hope you’ll consider investing in your community through this fund!
Happy Holidays!
