F23 (W4): More September Magic

Dear CSA Members + Farm Community,

Have I mentioned how much I love this time of year in the south? 50’s in the morning and brilliant sunshine in the afternoon, the subtle shift in the afternoon light, the magic of being able to eat freshly picked okra, cherry tomatoes, daikon radish and kale in the same meal?! And don’t even get me started on the flowers right now!

There’s also a shift in the critters we see on the farm around September. I’m sure you’re all noticing the Joro Spiders everywhere, but we’ve also been enjoying the company of some other orb weavers and garden spiders (see if you can spy the spider in the top pic). It’s also caterpillar time, and we’ve enjoyed getting acquainted with spiky, fluffy, or technicolor buddies (see pic below).

Even though the afternoons are warm, the cool mornings and evenings are tempting me to start making cozy foods again. Try stewing okra with tomatoes and peppers, throwing bok choy into a punchy broth with shitake mushrooms, or making this endlessly riff-able chard and white bean stew (you can truly throw in any veggies you have lying around, and substitute as much as you’d like- I’d recommend sweet peppers, loads of garlic, and some thinly sliced radish for garnish).

Happy eating!
