F23 (W5): It’s Dry Out Here!

Dear CSA Members + Farm Community,

It is DRY out there! Has anyone else noticed that we haven’t had a good rain in a while? We’re certainly feeling it on the farm. The fields are dry and dusty, and we’re watering all the time— par for the course in this weird weather year. Luckily, the plants are resilient, and the dry weather is helping keep the mildew and disease that usually hurts early fall crops at bay. Our cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans are still chugging along which is incredible for October. The fall brassicas- kale, collards, chard, bok choy- are also coming in beautifully, probably helped by the drier conditions.

This week, CSA members will get pink-eyed peas in their shares. These are a late-summer/fall delicacy of the highest order! Also called pink lady peas or purple hull peas, they’re creamier and a bit less earthy than their more common counterpart, the black eyed pea. Try them out the traditional way- simmered with ham hock or bacon and aromatics - or check out this vegetarian spin on the classic smoky flavor. If you’re looking for something a little different, try out this field pea hummus recipe— a perfect snack with the first of our fall carrots.

Happy eating!
