F23 (W2): Cool Temps & Happy Plants
Dear CSA Members + Farm Community,
If you haven’t been up before 8am recently you may not know this but fall really is coming! Last week’s cool temps and rain made for some happy plants. The greens we’ve been planting out are maturing quick, the daikon and watermelon radishes have doubled in size in the last week, and the latest round of cucumbers is starting to set fruit. This also means that the weeds are happy, and it’s a constant battle trying to keep the fields clear enough for tiny veggie seedlings to size up without being shaded out by taller weedy plants.
At Diamond Hill we’re already planning for winter growing- seeding out the crops you’ll be seeing at markets in January, playing field tetris (we want to grow everything, but where can we fit it?!), ordering row cover for freezing temps, and planting bulbs for next spring.
This week, all CSA members will get bok choy in their shares. Bok choy is a super versatile vegetable with sweet crunchy stems and tender leaves. I love it blanched and drizzled with sesame oil and some chili crisp, served with rice. You could also take advantage of these gorgeous cool evenings and grill it. Maybe throw it on the stovetop with some shitake mushrooms for an easy stir fry.
Happy eating!
