F23 (W7): How ‘Bout That Rain!!!
Dear CSA Members + Farm Community,
After four or so weeks without drop, last week’s overcast and rainy days were so welcome. The dusty fields soaked it right up, and the dusty farmers rejoiced! This rainfall will make getting fields prepped for planting much more effective, and will hopefully give a lot of the plants a good boost going into cooler weather. This time of year is a game of waiting and planning for the first frost— in Athens, that can come anytime between mid-October and mid-November, so we’re all keeping our weather apps easily accessible, and hoping that it’ll be late this fall so we can keep using our outdoor growing spaces for a bit longer. We’re also filling sandbags, measuring out row cover, and preparing ourselves to quickly cover our outdoor fields to buy us a few more weeks of growing should the frost come soon.
This week, you’ll get some of the prettiest salad turnips I’ve ever seen! Hakurei turnips are a sweet, tender, mild variety that is wonderful raw or cooked. We often snack on them straight from the field, but you could dress them up a bit by sauteeing them with their greens, roast them with radishes for an easy side dish, or throw them in a salad with bitter greens and lemony dressing. If you’re looking for something to do with the greens other than stewing them with aromatics and bacon, maybe throw ‘em on the stovetop and try these spicy skillet turnip greens or throw them in a savory broth.
Happy eating!
