SM23 (W1): Summer Crops TAKING OFF

Dear CSA Members + Farm Community,

Welcome to week 1 of the summer CSA season! We’re excited to have you with us for this next twelve weeks of veggie and flower goodness. In case this is your first season with us (or in a CSA in general), welcome! We send out a newsletter every week with some quick updates about the farm, info about events, an overview of what you’ll see in your CSA share or at market that week, and some ideas for recipes to try out with our produce.

If you’ve got questions about being in the CSA, this handy list of FAQs is a good place to start. If there’s anything you need to know that isn’t on this list, feel free to reach out at diamondhillfarmcsa@gmail.com. You’ll pick up your share every week between 4:00 and 6:00pm at your designated pickup location and on your day. We know that crud happens, so if you have to miss your pickup day, you can go by the Wednesday farmers market (for Tuesday pickup) or the Saturday farmers market (for Thursday pickup) to grab your share. Especially since it’s summertime and travel plans abound, if you know in advance that you won’t make your regular pickup please either ask a friend to come grab it for you or let us know before Sunday of the week before so we can make accommodations.

Now to the farm-y stuff! With this cool rainy May weather and the prediction for some hot sun coming our way, we’re bracing for a whole lot of growth on the farm. We’re starting to see the first ripe cherry tomatoes on our plants (which are TALL, see pics below for reference) and the squash and cucumbers are going crazy. This week will also mark some big transitions: okra and sweet peppers are going in, the first rounds of onions and garlic are coming out to cure. You’ll be seeing them later on in the summer! We’re also about to see an influx of flowers: summer favs like zinnias, lisianthus, and celosia are starting to pop, while the spring beauties are going strong. Expect some incredible and colorful bouquets coming your way!

This week’s share includes one of the farm crew’s favorites: cabbage! While it might not be the flashiest vegetable on the market table, cabbage is a workhorse. It stores beautifully, is full of important nutrients, and can be eaten in so many different ways. Try it on tacos in this creamy, tangy slaw, throw it on the grill and top with a Thai-inspired sauce, or if you’ve got a little counter space and don’t mind a wait, try making some sauerkraut!

Happy eating!
