SM23 (W2): Squash n’ Cukes Goin Crazy

Dear CSA Members + Farm Community,

Late spring on the farm means… planning for fall crops?! Believe it or not, we are making some big harvest pushes this week to get fields cleared in time to plant sweet potatoes that y’all will be seeing late summer through next spring. With the crisp mornings and overcast days last week and all this talk of storage crops for winter, we’re definitely feeling seasonally confused. Luckily, the plants are beautifully spring-y, and we’re harvesting so much good stuff for y’all.

Squash and cucumbers are fruiting like crazy, and tomatoes are a not-too-distant dream. In a surprise turn of events, the strawberries (who seemed to be fizzling out a few weeks ago) are back to producing some gorgeous berries, so expect to see more of them this week. More rounds of peppers and okra are looking ready to leave the greenhouse, rounding out our big summer planting pushes. We’re also finishing out our garlic and onion harvest, and the pole barn is full of drying alliums. It’s a sight to see!

With all the spring bounty, we are offering CSA members a deal on pickling cucumbers: 10 lbs for $20!! Email us at diamondhillfarmcsa@gmail.com to reserve a box to pick up at your regular CSA time.

You’ll be seeing lots of hakurei turnips at market and in your share this week! These turnips are sweet and tender enough to eat raw, and can withstand roasting or boiling and pureeing. A versatile beauty! Try ‘em out sauteed with their greens, slivered with carrots and apples in a salad, or baked into parmesan black pepper chips.

Happy eating!
