SP23 (W5): Transplanting Season!

Dear CSA Members + Farm Community,

As the average date of last frost (March 31st for Athens) came and went, your farmers were hard at work- it’s transplanting season! We start almost all of our vegetable and flower crops in the seedhouse weeks before they’re slated to be planted out, rather than direct seeding them in the field. This helps us in several ways: it allows us to account for spotty germination for crops that can be finnicky (looking at you, beets), and allows us to seed warm weather crops earlier since they’re in a warm, controlled environment.

The tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash we’ve been planting out is growing quickly! Some of the tomatoes look ready for their first round of trellising. We’re also noticing some peas that seemed to be damaged by the last frost are bouncing back and starting to climb their trellises. We’re also harvesting some beautiful strawberries, which CSA members got in their shares last week, and market friends should be seeing this week.

In your shares, you’ll find the first of this spring’s bok choy! I love bok choy sauteed with garlic, chili flakes, and a splash of rice wine vinegar, or thrown into a stir fry. If you’re in the mood to cook outdoor this week, try out this grilled bok choy recipe! And while you’ve got the grill fired up, throw on some asparagus.

Happy eating!
