SM23 (W6): Things are Heating Up
Dear CSA Members + Farm Community,
With last week’s hot and dry weather, we’ve been busy getting fields ready for late summer and early fall plantings, keeping at it with bulk harvests (think potatoes, and some early winter squash), trellising tomatoes, battling the weeds… the list goes on! Thankfully, the heat and pest pressure is slowing some of our early summer plantings down while the time spent planting ramps up. And don’t worry, we are staying as hydrated as we can, and we hope you are too!
With the holiday tomorrow, we understand that some CSA members may be travelling or grillin’ out or otherwise unable to come to their standard pickup time. If this sounds like you, please plan to pick your share up at the Wednesday market at Creature Comforts (Tuesday members) or the Saturday market at Bishop Park (Thursday members). If the usual extra day isn’t going to work for you either, please let us know as soon as you can by emailing us at diamondhillfarmcsa@gmail.com so we can figure out a good time for you to get your veg! And, as always, you’re welcome to have a friend pick up for you!
This week, you’ll get one of my favorite summer veggies- long beans! This Southeast Asian bean, also called the Yardlong Bean, can be used just like any green bean- blanched, stir fried, pan friend, casserole-ed etc. Try them dry fried with garlic, scallion, and szechuan peppers (though any hot pep will do), or for a quick side, try them pan fried with garlic and a squeeze of lemon before serving. We also implore you, for this holiday week to kick back with a cold bev, and to consider adding cucumber? Maybe spice up your marg with cucumber and mint, or test out a cucumber cooler if gin is more your speed.
Happy eating!
