SP24 (W12): Lots Coming Into Season!

Dear Farm Community -

We hope you all had a great week full of delish veggies and didn’t let the rain get you down too much. We had quite a laundry list of to-do’s around the farm, and happy to say we got a lot done. We planted out our Chrysanthemums and a whopping 7 beds of Dahlias - all of our favorite varieties from last year like Cafe au Lait, Time Warp, Sweet Natalie, and one ball-variety we gave the in-house name “Space Jam” due to its resemblance to a little basketball☺ Dahlias are one of our favorite and most beloved flowers, so we’re happy to have the tubers in the ground and getting to work. Plus, since we store all of our tubers over the winter every year, planting them out means we free up a lot of space in our cool room (which will soon be filled with ripe tomatoes…)

We’re continuing to string the tomato vines up on T-posts as they get ever-taller - we’re currently clocking them in at the average height of a 10-year old child. While we aren't quite yet biting into perfect juicy red tomatoes, we are seeing some very big and beautiful green heirlooms on the vine! Not long now….

More in the baby-plants department, we seeded more sunflowers last week and planted a bed of dill in one of our greenhouses! Dill is a new crop for us and we’re excited to be expanding our herb offerings.

Dreaming about the bounty to come is fun and all, but what’s even better is getting excited about the Here and Now! We’re starting to harvest lots of warm weather stars like beans (green, purple, wax, & dragon’s tongue), zucchini (yellow, green & striped), squash (yellow, zephyr, & more varieties coming), cucumbers (English, Unagi, pickling & more coming), leeks, cauliflower (white, green, purple, orange & romanesco), and more!! Whew!

With harvests like that you KNOW that summer CSA is going to be a party. Make sure to check out our CSA options and get on board while things are heating up! We are offering an organic pasture-raised egg add-on this year, courtesy of our friends at Smyly Farms. You can sign up for the egg addition in the Full Summer CSA. Weekly-pay egg share add-on will go live on Monday May 27th.

Sign up for full-season or weekly-pay CSA by this Saturday 5/25 to receive an invite to our farm tour on 5/26!

We’ll also have this enormous variety with us at all of our markets! As a reminder, we are at 4 markets every week:
- Wednesday Athens Farmers Market at Creature Comforts 5-8pm
- Saturday Athens Farmers Market at Bishop Park 8am-12pm
We have a new location at the Saturday AFM! When you enter the market we are directly to the right. Come say hi at our new spot!
- Saturday ATL Freedom Farmers Market at the Carter Center 8:30am-12pm
- Saturday ATL Morningside Farmers Market at Morningside Presbyterian Church 8-11:30am

CSA gang - everybody gets squash this week! Cook it up as a first-taste-of-summer side dish with this sautéed squash recipe from Love & Lemons, one of my trustiest food blogs. Shares will have a mix of yellow squash, zephyr squash, and zucchini, but any will work for these recipes and in general can be swapped out for one another. Try another angle with this recipe for cheesy baked squash rounds! You can also make a great vegetarian main with these squash fritters or a hearty stew. You’ll need some store-bought ingredients to supplement for now, but it won’t be long until that stew can be made with 100% Diamond Hill Farm produce!

Happy Eating :)

P.S. CSA members - Just a reminder about our farm tour on 5/26! You should have received an invitation with your share last week. If for any reason you didn’t, please check in with Averi this week or look in your pickup reminder email for more information :) Please shoot us an email if you plan on attending with an estimated group size. Spouses, kiddos, and CSA-curious pals are all welcome!

P.P.S. Frog count this week - 10, plus 1 rabbit

Enjoy your week!
