SP24 (W3): Spring Equinox
Dear Farm Community -
At long last, the Spring Equinox is tomorrow! The temps this past week sure felt like it too, so very sunny and warm. It’s hard to believe that tonight we’ll be covering up our crops to protect them from lows in the 30’s. These Northern Georgia spring temperature changes really keep you on your toes! Our early spring crops have been thriving though; we have kale, fennel, chard, lettuce, leeks, onions, and more sizing up nicely. We even had a small harvest of asparagus on Friday, a promise of more to come. Spring also means our amphibious friends are returning, and Diamond Hill Farmers are seeing more and more frogs and toads! Check out the photo gallery below to see our “top frog” from this week.
We’ve also been keeping occupied turning over greenhouse planting area and transplanting babies into the high tunnels while field prep moves along. We direct-seeded more field carrots this week and hung trellises for our sugar snap peas to grab onto once they get a bit taller. The biggest task on the farm these days has been harvesting and bunching flowers, the sheer number and beauty is outstanding. Fridays have turned into flower bunching parties for everybody (veggie crew included) as we wait for the influx of veggies on the horizon.
Speaking of an abundance of flowers ~ mark your calendars! We will be participating in a local Spring Pop-Up Market at Buvez (585 Barber St) next Tuesday 3/26 from 2-6pm! We will have loads of flowers with us, and local artist Sierra K Ceramics will have handmade ceramic vases available for purchase to make those flowers look extra dazzling! Grab a coffee from Buvez to sip while you stroll around the market. We predict a very charming afternoon with lots of flowers, art, and good vibes!
Quick Atlanta market update: Freedom Farmers Market is closed this weekend (3/23) due to an event at the Carter Center. However, we encourage our Freedom Farmers Market customers to visit our stand at the Morningside Farmers Market, just 10 minutes away. Morningside Farmers Market runs from 8am-11:30am. Freedom Farmers Market will return in full force the following Saturday 3/30!

The items in your CSA boxes this week provide a wonderful opportunity to embrace the changing of seasons and this back-and-forth dance with the weather. Try out this incredibly nutritious “Super Simple Very Green Soup” that utilizes the bok choy, spinach, and green garlic in your share, and even makes use of those beautiful beet greens! If you’re looking to try something a little different with your beets, check out this Easy Beet Falafel or make a cozy Beet Gnocchi. Our $35 share members will see a fun fave in their boxes this week: kohlrabi! While its appearance may be a little strange, this cruciferous veggie is a delicious vitamin C powerhouse that tastes like a cabbage with a texture similar to a potato. This veggie will be making appearances in the CSA throughout the year, but a great recipe to get you started is this classic - kohlrabi home fries.
Thanks for reading, hope you have a wonderful week!
Happy Spring :)
